Honouring Loss & Transition Through Ritual and Ceremony
Whether you’re navigating grief, celebrating birth, marking a transition, or honouring an ending or a beginning, ritual can offer a meaningful way to pause and be present with what is unfolding. If you would like to create a ceremony for yourself, or for someone else, I would be honoured to support you in shaping something that reflects your truth, honours your journey and meets you gently, wherever you are.
Throughout human history (in fact dating back to early-Neanderthal times around 130,000 years ago), people have turned to ritual and ceremony to help navigate life’s rites of passage. They’re part of our shared human story - ways of marking change, making meaning, and creating a bridge between what was and what is yet to come.
In times of loss, ritual can be an anchor in the storm. It can hold us when words feel too small, or too much, and offer a container for the often-messy, unpredictable waves of grief that can come with change.
Rituals don’t have to look any one way. They might be:
- Simple or elaborate, one-time or repeated
- Religious, spiritual, cultural, familial, or entirely personal
- Shared with community or held quietly alone
What matters is the intention behind them. A ritual, done with meaning, can invite connection, create space for mourning, and help us integrate our grief in ways that feel safe and honouring.
As Malidoma Patrice Somé writes:“Ritual is called for because our soul communicates things to us that the body translates as need, or want, or absence. So, we enter into ritual in order to respond to the call of the soul.”
